Overview

Letšeng Mine consists of two primary vertical kimberlite pipes, together with deposits of alluvial gravels. The two pipes are adjacent, with cone-shaped sections and confirmed vertical depths of 495 and 655 metres respectively. Recent average grade across the two pipes is 2,06 carats per hundred tonnes. With approximately 14 percent of all stones being larger than 10,8 carats, the production profile is more akin to that of an alluvial than a kimberlite mine.

Letšeng currently has a processing capacity of 2,5-million tonnes per year. A decision to invest US $45-million in its processing capacity will see this double to 5,28-million tonnes per year by mid-2008, which will make it the seventh largest kimberlite mine in the world.
